It’s the End of an Era

October 25th, 2016

Oh, hey! Remember me? <waves>

You may have noticed it’s been pretty quiet around here lately. Well, for a good 18 months+ actually. But sometimes, things don’t turn out the way you expected them to. You think you know what path you want to take, then you realise you’re not actually enjoying the direction you’re heading in.

As many of you know, I spent nearly 5 years working as a wedding photographer, as well as dabbling in stills, property, and boudoir. In the end, after much soul searching, I realised that wedding photography wasn’t something I wanted to pursue. As much as I loved the clients I worked with and felt extremely grateful I never experienced a bridezilla, I felt that it wouldn’t be fair to future clients if my heart wasn’t in it. I’ve encountered many wedding photographers over the years who have expressed their dislike for the industry, and I always felt they were doing their clients a disservice. I didn’t want to be one of those photographers.

During my 18-month absence from social media, I’ve been quietly working away in the background shooting boudoir and property, as well as working as a freelance videographer on a whole host of random projects. Unfortunately, the more I’ve moved into other areas and involved myself with other projects, the more I’ve found my love for the industry starting to waiver. I’ll be phasing out the property and the video but continuing with boudoir photography, as this is an area I still deeply adore. I will more than likely delete my Facebook page before the end of the year.

For the past couple of years, I’ve also been running another business selling hand printed wrapping papers and other printed goods. Having studied printmaking at college, I think it was only a matter of time before I ended up returning to my printing roots. I like the physical act of making things and printing satisfies the need to create something, followed by the feeling of satisfaction once it’s complete. Although The Barefoot Printer is still in its early days, I’m excited about moving forward with it and seeing where it goes.

So, I guess I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years. I’ve met some lovely people along the way, and for the most part, I’ve had a blast. To those who made the past few years fun and interesting, I’m sending you lots of love with some virtual chest bumps.

If you’re interested in boudoir photography, you can find me over here, and if you like brown paper packages tied up with string, please head over to my Etsy shop. You can also follow along with my creative journey on Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.

…..365 project {days 29 to 36}

March 8th, 2013

Day 29:

Why is it when you need important documents you can never find them? Even though you know you always keep them in a certain place. Last Friday saw me and Ian turning the house upside down and going through everything at least 4 times each – we still didn’t find what we were looking for……

Life lately and a glass half empty…..

November 20th, 2012

Much as I hate to admit it, sometimes I can be a ‘glass half empty’ kinda gal. We’ve all been there – nothing seems to be going ‘quite right’ and things are taking longer than expected. You can’t quite figure out what to focus on next, part of your exhaust randomly falls off and you lose your Monopoly title…….(all in one weekend might I add)

Last week I decided Read more »

It’s all about me…..

January 7th, 2012

As I looked out across the water, the reflections were still, and the air was silent. It was something I had neglected last year, so this year I knew that some changes had to take place.

It’s easy to forget about what Read more »

Ray of light…..

November 7th, 2011

As the grey clouds closed in, and the light started to fade, I insisted that we still head to the beach. As we pulled up at the side of the road the clouds started to look blacker than ever, but I was determined we were going to the beach.

As we got out of the car, I grabbed my camera and we started walking towards Read more »

Upcycle Challenge

October 19th, 2011

“We are looking for teams of wedding industry professionals to get together and create a range of upcycled brides & bridesmaid looks plus a “themed table” with only a few rules….

All items must come from a LOCAL charity shops or 2nd hand stores (within 25 miles of where you live or slightly further afield if there are non in your area) this includes clothes and all accessories and you have to prove you have bought from a charity shop by either having photos of you buying them or a receipt of some sort, the table must include centrepiece or display, table names or numbers plus place cards etc..everything you would expect to see!

There must be at least 2 table settings, tables and chairs can be your own but everything else must be up-cycled”!

These were the rules given by Colette of All Wrapped Up Events back in July, when the ‘Upcycle Challenge’ was launched. I answered Colette’s call on Twitter for a photographer and the rest as they say, is errr…..history!

10 minutes, 10 images…..

March 11th, 2011

I’ve been trying to get organised lately and tidy things up a little bit. Yesterday while I was going through some old images, trying to figure what could be deleted and what could be kept, I found these photo’s.

Last year when I started at Aspire, one of our first photography day’s was with Tamara Peel. Tamara has so much energy, she lives, breathes and sleeps photography! She makes you look at everything with “new eyes”, so to speak. She gave the group the subject of “lines” and then sent us off around the mill yard to take some photographs. I think we had 10 minutes to take 10 photographs, and we weren’t allowed to look at the screen on the back of our camera’s to see how they looked either. Boy, she was strict!

I like looking at things like this – it makes me realise that inspiration for images can be found almost anywhere! I realise that I  haven’t posted all of the 10 images, as I just wanted to share my favourites with you!

I’m heading out tomorrow  to check out some locations for an upcoming shoot, and this has given me the inspiration to look for new in the familiar.
